Fall in New England: the prime time and spot to observe the foliage that the beautiful season has to offer. Whether apple picking with family or watching a high school football game under the lights with friends, the options are endless. Western New England University student Maria Khan, a senior from Danbury, Connecticut, talked about what fall in New England means to her and the memories she associates with this special season.

Visiting Burlington, Vermont, is a top memory for Khan. “I believe it is the pique of fall…it is so beautiful; the leaves are changing colors to reds, oranges, and yellows,” Khan said. Thinking back to her childhood, she remembers a famous saying she used to tell her mom. “The perfect temperature is 68 degrees,” Khan explained while laughing about this humorous line.

When asked about what fall signifies to her, the senior was quick to say new beginnings. “It is the start of a new school year, a fresh start,” she went on to say. Khan associates these fall months with love. Her relationship with her boyfriend, Colton, began in the fall, as well as her birthday: November 25. “This year, my birthday will be even more special, turning 21. I am excited, but the reality that I am graduating in December is starting to hit,” she said.

While cherishing the beautiful weather and birthday celebrations, there are parts of the season that do not strike Khan’s fancy. The idea of winter being right around the corner is at the top of the list. “I hate the winter; it just drags by. Driving in the snow, the cold weather, everything about it,” Khan said.

As the days are becoming shorter, fall has arrived. It is a time of year that should be embraced. Not everyone gets to experience the beauty that we do and all the gifts that nature has to offer.
