Wednesday, October 30 was the fifth game of this year’s thrilling Major League Baseball World Series. Coming off of a dominant 11-4 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Yankees sought to carry their newfound momentum against their rivals, who held a 3-1 series lead. The first three innings went phenomenally for New York, as the Yankees scored five runs, giving them a dominant 5-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. After a scoreless fourth inning, it seemed like the Yankees had this game in the palm of their hand. However, the fifth inning came up in a flash, and it was here where the entire game would be turned on its head.
This particular inning not only saw the Dodgers tie the Yankees in a flash, but set the scene for what could only be realized as one of the biggest team collapses in recent memory. The Yankees made numerous costly errors and inevitably gave up five runs by the conclusion of the inning. By then, the damage had been done. The Yankees would score another run in the following inning, but that would be their last time in the lead as the Dodgers would take two runs in the eighth inning to secure their eighth World Series title.
This year’s World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees will go down in history. Both teams had some of the best rosters in the league, with players like Juan Soto and Aaron Judge on the Yankees and players like Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani on the Dodgers. However, despite the teams being some of the most impressive in the league, the World Series seemed to be over as soon as it began. The Dodgers built up an impressive 3-0 series lead heading into the fourth game, winning 6-3, 4-2, and 4-2 respectively. While the Yankees fought valiantly, it was once again too little, too late for the team. Now, as the MLB goes into the offseason, the teams will train for next year and come back swinging, prepared to fight for a title once more.
