Ahmed Elbakri spreads a sense of community throughout Western New England University, always greeting classmates with a warm smile. The sophomore majoring in Marketing Communication/Advertising with a minor in Entrepreneurship has an amazing story in a journey that involves more than academics. From leading the Muslim Student Association (MSA) to working as a student ambassador for admissions and a marketing intern for the WNE dining hall, Elbakri has dedicated himself to forming connections and creating a welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds.

For Elbakri, choosing WNE was about more than being close to his home; it was about belonging.

“I wanted to be somewhere I could really connect with people, not just be another face in a lecture hall,” he said.

WNE offered him the opportunity to engage deeply in campus life while creating meaningful relationships with the small class sizes.

One of Elbakri’s most fulfilling roles is serving as president of the Muslim Student Association. Under his leadership, the MSA has grown into a community for both religious practice and cultural exchange. He organizes major events such as community conferences, bringing together Muslims from neighboring campuses, and Iftar gatherings, where non-Muslims are invited to break the Ramadan fast and learn about Islam.

Elbakri shared, “This role isn’t just about leading, it’s about creating a space where people feel seen, supported, and proud of who they are.”

With his work on campus, Elbakri has also connected with the wider Islamic community in Western Massachusetts, strengthening ties between students and local mosques.

One of the most memorable events Elbakri organized was the Ramadan Iftar, where students from different backgrounds gathered to break their fast together.

Ahmed shared a moment when a non-Muslim student approached him after the event, saying, “I never realized how beautiful this tradition is. Thank you for sharing it with me.” Moments like these reaffirm Elbakri’s belief in the power of community and cultural understanding.

Apart from his work with the MSA, Elbakri serves as a student ambassador for the admissions office. Whether leading campus tours or working at major events like Open House, he helps incoming students navigate one of the most important decisions of their lives, which is determining where to go to college. Not only was he able to form lasting friendships, but this opportunity allowed him to improve his leadership and public speaking skills.

“Helping students make one of the biggest decisions of their lives is something I don’t take lightly. I want them to feel the same sense of belonging I did,” Elbakri explained as he pointed out an unexpected skill he had developed: walking backward while giving tours.

As a marketing intern for WNE’s dining services, Elbakri uses his classroom knowledge to manage social media content. From crafting engaging posts to analyzing audience engagement, his internship has given him hands-on experience in his field of study.

“It’s cool knowing that the skills I’m developing now will help me in my career after college,” he said.

This role, combined with his entrepreneurship minor puts him in a good position for a future in marketing, branding, or even starting his own business.

With so many commitments, Elbakri has had to master the art of time management. Balancing leadership, academics, and work isn’t always easy, but he embraces the challenge.

“College isn’t about just getting a degree. It’s about growing into the person you want to become,” he said.

Despite his packed schedule, Elbakri still finds time for additional activities. He works as a greeter in the Student Hub and participates in clubs like Baja and the Entrepreneurship Club. His commitment makes him a standout student and leader at WNE.

Looking forward, Elbakri envisions a future where he combines his passion for marketing and leadership. Whether working for a major advertising firm or launching his own business, he seeks to continue creating meaningful connections between people. With his determination, leadership, and ability to bring people together, Elbakri’s future is undoubtedly bright. No matter where life takes him, the lessons he’s learned and the communities he’s built at WNE will always be a part of his journey.

Ahmed Elbakri’s story is one of leadership, connection, and purpose. Whether he’s organizing community events, welcoming students, or shaping the campus dining brand, his impact is valuable throughout the campus. He looks forward to the future in hopes of inspiring others beyond college.
