The Western New England University Chapter of the Young Democratic Socialists of America is in the process of coming to Western New England University and is excited to establish itself as a new student organization! Anyone can join. You don’t have to be a socialist, just someone interested in getting involved with progressive politics on campus and a passion for social justice!
Anonymously, we asked some students and some prospective members how they felt about the new chapter.
A freshman on campus had this to say when asked what they thought about a chapter coming to Western New England University, “I think it’s a great organization to help build the diversity on our campus as well as to educate!”
Similarly, a senior on campus said, “I’m excited to add a club on campus that brings a focus on national issues but is centered on activism in the community.”
Additionally, a prospective member said, “Democratic socialism is often misunderstood since many people don’t believe that democracy and socialism are compatible concepts. I believe that having a YDSA chapter on campus will help to challenge this perspective as well as provide a space for students to advocate for political change within the university and beyond.”
YDSA coming to Western New England University means a revitalization of progressive and leftist politics that are currently dead throughout the Western New England University campus and bringing about positive change for the campus and the broader Western Massachusetts/ Springfield area.
Freshman Student and Secretary-Treasurer of the Chapter explains her feelings about the Chapter. “As someone who became interested in politics and world affairs in elementary school,
I’ve become increasingly more aware of and disappointed in the many failures of our society. From equitable education to healthcare to standard wages, we as people are being incredibly underserved by our institutions and government. So for me, it’s always been important to get involved in organizations such as YDSA to remind everyone that we people are the majority, and by taking action, we can create the change we wish for.”
