If you’re new to the rock scene, you may have no clue who Juliet Simms is. Simms is wife to alternative rock heartthrob Andy Biersack, performatively known as Andy Black.
Biersack and Simms have been the iconic couple of Alt-Rock for nearly a decade, and continue to leave fans gushing over their relationship. The pair met in a unique way back in 2009. Simms was on tour with her then band, Automatic Loveletter, when one night she’d tweeted about the main actress, Scout Taylor-Compton, of the newly released Halloween film. The actress tweeted Simms back, leading to an online friendship.
When Simms returned to L.A. following the close of her tour, she and Scout planned to meet for dinner. Both women were in relationships at the time and brought their partners along. Compton arrived at the restaurant trailed by her boyfriend, who was no other than Andy Biersack.
Simms and Biersack had anything and everything in common, but the night didn’t end how some would imagine. There was no shadiness, secret affairs, or hidden feelings between the two. Compton and Simms met up a few more times with Biersack tagging along, but then the friendship sort of fizzled out.
It wasn’t until Simms was gearing up for another leg of Vans Warped Tour that she’d seen Biersack again. Andy’s band, Black Veil Brides, was quickly blowing up and the two reconnected within the first couple of weeks. The rest, they say, is history.
Flash forward to today, Black Veil Brides is still going strong after a decade, as well as Andy’s solo project, Andy Black. Simms’ music career, however, has taken many pauses over the years, as she struggled to find her sound and battled with her own demons, such as addiction.
Lilith Czar has officially laid to rest her past self and risen as the self-assured, rightful King of Rock. The artist’s forthcoming full-length record is titled Created From Filth and Dust and demonstrates the singer’s newfound control over herself.
In a recent interview with Paper Mag, Lilith discusses the origin of her name. The article states how “Lilith refers to the Legend of the First Woman. Where Eve was created from Adam’s rib and therefore perceived to be lesser than him, Lilith was born his equal and created from the same exact earth (or “filth and dust”). But if Adam was considered a king, why wasn’t Lilith? “Czar,” then, is the musician’s reclamation of this story by putting Lilith in her rightful position on the throne centuries later.”
Her debut single “King” punches with a chorus that sings, “If it’s a man’s world, I wanna be king / If it’s a man’s world, don’t wanna be queen.” The accompanying music video features Lilith in theatrical visuals, shapeshifting into the many versions of herself.
From being a fan of Simms to a fan of Lilith, the last eight years have brought me along on this gut-wrenching journey to reinvention. Watching her transform into an individual that has reclaimed their sobriety and become a woman that she is sure of has been nothing short of powerful. I look forward to watching the ascension of Lilith Czar across the music industry, and ultimately her life.
