1. What is gardening club?
We are a pretty small club on campus centered around a shared love of plants and gardening. We love to cater our meetings to our club members. If someone has a specific topic they want to learn more about we are always open to suggestions!
2. What kinds of things can students take from the club or enjoy as one of its members?
Whether you have ten plants or have killed ten plants, there is still something for you at Gardening Club. Our EBoard members have lots of plant knowledge they are always willing to share, and if we don’t know the answer, we are certainly willing to help you find it. We try to give away as many plants as possible at our meetings to introduce our members to new types of plants, and to provide hands-on learning about different gardening techniques.
3. How can students get involved?
If you’re looking to get involved with our club, come to one of our meetings! We meet every other Thursday at 6 in CSP. Come learn about plants, talk about plants, or just come hang out with us. Follow us on Instagram @wnegardeningclub where we post meeting updates. Feel free to contact Morgan Schmidt ([email protected]) or any of our eboard members if you have any questions or would like to learn more!
4. Why are you personally involved in the club and what do you love about it?
Morgan: I got involved with this club during my first year. I stuck around because of the laid back environment and the amazing community it offered. The club allowed me to learn more about something I was interested in but knew hardly anything about. (Plus who doesn’t love free plants!)
Miranda: I was introduced to the club my freshman year at the student involvement expo. Before I knew it, one plant turned into 20+, and my interest for plants has only grown. I too love the laid back environment, and how curiosity-driven it is. The people involved with the club are such wonderful and accepting people, it really has become a safe space for me.
5. I’ve seen a gardening club survey floating around.. — what’s that all about?
The Gardening Club is working on starting a community garden on campus. It’s something we have been thinking about for a few years. Now we are looking to gauge interest in the project. We want to hear everyone’s thoughts on this project, good and bad, that way we know what we may need to add or take away.
6. How might a community garden benefit WNE, and where would it go?
A community garden would be a great way for people to get involved and connect with nature. Any undergraduate, grad student, or WNE staff member is welcome to apply for a plot where they can plant anything they want (with some obvious exceptions which would be clearly laid out).
Even if one does not get a plot, there will be a communal section to the garden, which all of the university population is welcome to take from. It also provides a new space for students to hang out, especially during springtime. We are still in the process of figuring out the location, but we want to ensure it’s somewhere accessible and protected from reckless damage and animals. However, there will be some things we’ll just have to deal with.
7. Is there anything else people should know about Gardening Club?
You really don’t need to have any gardening abilities to get involved with the club. Most people come in not knowing anything about gardening or house plants, or just want to take up a new hobby. We have lots of folks who come to just hang out and learn more about gardening and the wide variety of plants we have in the world.
